Fine-Needle Aspiration (FNA)

At Lahore Oncoplastic Breast Services, we offer Fine-Needle Aspiration (FNA), a crucial diagnostic procedure for examining suspicious lumps or abnormal areas in the body. Dr. Hammad Raza Sheikh, with over 1500 successful surgeries, leads our team in performing this minimally invasive technique.

What is Fine-Needle Aspiration?

FNA, also known as fine-needle biopsy, involves using a thin needle and syringe to extract cells, tissue, and fluids from a suspicious area. This sample is then analyzed by our expert pathologists to determine the nature of the cells.

FNA vs. Core Biopsy

While both FNA and core biopsy are needle-based procedures, FNA uses a thinner needle and is less invasive. At our clinic, we choose the most appropriate method based on each patient’s unique situation.

Uses of Fine-Needle Aspiration

Diagnostic Purposes:
At Lahore Oncoplastic Breast Services, we use FNA to:
– Assess suspicious lumps or masses
– Diagnose potential cancers
– Identify bacterial infections
– Evaluate non-cancerous growths

Common FNA sites include:

– Breast (e.g., breast cysts)
– Thyroid (e.g., thyroid nodules)
– Lymph nodes
– Skin

For deeper tissues, we use advanced imaging guidance techniques.

Therapeutic Applications:

In some cases, we use FNA to drain:
– Abscesses
– Cysts
– Seromas (common after breast surgeries)

FNA is generally well-tolerated. You may feel a slight pinch or discomfort during the procedure, but we use local anesthesia to minimize any pain.

The actual FNA procedure typically takes about 10-20 minutes. However, you should plan to be at our clinic for about an hour to account for preparation and post-procedure care.

In most cases, fasting is not necessary for an FNA. However, if your procedure requires imaging guidance, we may provide specific instructions.

Results are usually available within 3-5 working days. Dr. Sheikh will schedule a follow-up appointment to discuss your results in detail.

While FNA can often detect cancer cells, in some cases, additional tests may be needed for a definitive diagnosis.

Most patients can resume normal activities immediately after the procedure. We advise avoiding strenuous activities for 24 hours.
